Ulrich Fastenrath (Germany)
Professor, University of Dresden

Professor Fastenrath is one of the directors of the Institute of Economic Law and of the School of International Relations at the University of Dresden. He teaches public international law, European Union law and German public law at the law faculty as well as at the School of International Relations, which he co-founded together with colleagues from other scientific fields (international politics, international economic relations, history). From 2000 to 2003 he served as dean of the law faculty.

After having studied law at the universities of Frankfurt, Tübingen, Marburg (all in Germany), and Lausanne (Switzerland), Fastenrath became a research assistant of professor Simma, then at the university of Munich, nowadays judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. He obtained a doctorate and habilitation from the University of Munich and was visiting professor in several universities.

Professor Fastenrath is a member of the Advisory Council for public international law at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Berlin. He was head of the German delegation to a seminar of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on local democracy and at the same time the moderator of one of the discussion groups.

He has published books and articles in German and English. His main fields of research are the theory of international law, human rights and the position of States as part of the international community. At the Jean Monnet Center at NYU he will be working on the constitutionalization of international law.
